A C-27J Spartan aircraft of the Romanian Air Force, configured to extinguish fires, on Monday joined the efforts to put out wildfires in the forested area of southwestern Moldova Noua, Caras-Severin County, according to the National Defence Ministry (MApN).
The air mission is carried out at the request of the Emergency Management Department with the Ministry of Home Affairs, given that there is a risk of spreading to other forested areas and that the actions of the response forces are hampered by rough terrain and the lack of water sources.
MApN says that since August 14, the Romanian Air Force has been carrying out missions in Albania in support of the response forces to extinguish wildfires there. So far, the C-27J Spartan aircraft have had 24 sorties and has flown 122 containers of water.
In the firefighting configuration, the C-27J Spartan aircraft can carry up to 6,000 litres of water (maximum six containers) by each pass.
The aircraft of this type of the Romanian Air Force have acted since 2017 to extinguish wildfires in Romania in the counties of Mehedinti, Alba, Hunedoara and Buzau.
Also, in previous years, the Romanian Air Force carried out firefighting missions in France, Slovenia, Greece and North Macedonia.
