More than 40 citizens from the Gaza Strip were picked up on Wednesday from Israel and will be brought to Romania, where some of them will stay, while the others will be transferred to Norway and France.
On Wednesday, a C-130 Hercules aircraft of the Romanian Air Force carried out a medical evacuation mission of 13 Palestinian patients from the Gaza Strip, severely affected by the lack of access to adequate medical treatment, along with 34 family members, the Department for Emergency Situations said.
Thus, the aircraft belonging to the Ministry of National Defence (MApN) took off from Otopeni Airport at around 12:30, bound for Israel - Ilan and Asaf Ramon International Airport, where it landed at around 16:30, Romanian time.
After boarding the patients and their relatives, as well as carrying out the medical assessment, the plane took off from the airport in Israel at around 18:00, Romanian time, bound for Bucharest - Base 90 Air Transport - Otopeni, where it landed at around 22:00.
During transport, medical assistance was provided by a team of two doctors and two nurses from the UPU-SMURD of the Bucharest Emergency Hospital, a doctor and a nurse from MApN. Two liaison officers from the DSU were also on board the aircraft to ensure the mission went smoothly.
Seven patients, including 6 children - aged between 4 months and 11 years, and 1 adult aged 18 years (accompanied by 23 relatives), will receive specialized treatment at several hospitals in Bucharest.
Three adult patients (accompanied by 5 family members) are being transferred to Norway with an aircraft belonging to the Romanian Air Force.
Three other patients (with 6 family members) were transported to the French Republic with two aircraft provided by the Luxembourg authorities.
The mission was executed following requests received from the European Commission's Emergency Response Coordination Center (ERCC), through the CECIS, under the EU Union Civil Protection Mechanism.
The operation was carried out in close cooperation between the Ministry of Internal Affairs through the Department of Emergency Situations, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of National Defence, the Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization, the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), a unit of the Ministry of Defence of Israel, Israel's national emergency medical, disaster, ambulance and blood bank service "Magen David Adom", the General Directorate of Social Welfare and Child Protection of the Bucharest City Hall, Habitat for Humanity and other authorities essential to ensure an efficient and safe deployment, the DSU specifies.
