Romanian Black Sea beaches extended by 42 hectares (environment minister)

Cristiana Pașca Palmer

Environment Minister Cristina Pasca Palmer evaluated on-site the quality and impact of investments on European funds in a project of reducing the corrosion of Romania's Black Sea shore; she estimated on Friday that works have extended the beaches by some 42 hectares.

"It is a remarkable achievement, and I am very impressed of the completion of this investment. Not only were the beaches restored, they have been extended by nearly 100 metres. (...) It is one of the great infrastructure works completed in Romania over the past two years - and with European funds. It is a very complex project; it cost nearly 170 million euros. (...) It began in 2013 and was completed in 2015. We're continuing with phase two, which I really want, meaning 240 million euros already allocated to the programme. The environmental report will follow, and we hope to carry out the auction this year - during my tenure. I think all Romanians and foreigners will be surprised of such a large beach," she said.

Palmer mentioned that the sand surfaces will be commissioned to tourist operators for maintenance and summer arrangement by April 15.
