There is a very strong political consensus over Romania joining the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), so 2026 is an ambitious target that can be achieved, the national coordinator for Romania's accession to the OECD, Luca Niculescu, said on Tuesday.

"There is no set date in relation to the OECD. However, there is a desired date, announced by the Romanian prime minister, president, Senate chairman, and there are also politicians who have expressed their desire for Romania to be an OECD member in 2026. The accession process is very dynamic, we work day and night. It is an ambitious goal, a goal that can be achieved. The condition is to stay on a good trajectory that we are on now. There is a very strong political consensus over joining the OECD. A special commission has been set up in Parliament to support the accession process, which includes members of all political parties with parliamentary representation," said Niculescu told a conference called "Barometer of entrepreneurs who build the future - Romania & the Republic of Moldova."

According to him, Romania joining the OECD means more funds that will come to the country for entrepreneurs. At the same time, to companies it will mean more transparency and a better administration with which they will work, as well as the possibility of opening up to other markets.

"To join the OECD, you need to have well-governed public enterprises. Romania is in the process of reform, as a result of the requirements of the European Commission and the discussions with OECD. There are 26 committees that evaluate us. When we talk to those who evaluate us, we receive, after discussions, some priority recommendations. In fact, there are some obligations that we have to fulfil before accession, and the reform of the governance of state-owned enterprises is part of the priority recommendations," said Niculescu.
