Romania's Cirstea progresses to US Open singles 3rd round
Romanian tennis player Sorana Cirstea on Wednesday progressed to the third round of the women's singles event at the US Open tournament, the last Grand Slam of the year, after defeating Russian Anna Kalinskaya 6-3 6- 4, told Agerpres.
N. 30 Cirstea, 33, world number 30, won in 65 minutes and equalled her best performance at Flushing Meadows.
She had never made it past the third round at the US Open, a stage she reached in 2009, 2019 and 2020. In 2022, the Romanian lost in the second round.
In the first set with Kalinskaya, 24, world number 87, Cirstea made the difference with the only successful break at 3-2. In the second set, Cirstea won against the serve at 2-2, but immediately after, Kalinskaya did a rebreak. The Romanian managed another break at 4-4, getting a 6-4 victory.
The Romanian had more winners, 17-14, and made fewer unforced errors, 17-24.
This was the third meet of Cirstea and Kalinskaya. Kalinskaya won in 2020 in New York (where the tournament was moved from Cincinnati due to the COVID-19 pandemic), 7-5 6-4, in the second round. Cirstea tied in March 2022, in the third round at Indian Wells, 5-7 6-1 6-0.
For her performance so far in the tournament, Cirstea won USD 191,000 and 130 WTA singles points. Her next opponent will be the winner between Kazakh Elena Rybakina, world number four, and Australian Ajla Tomljanovic.
