Romanian tennis player Carmen Andreea Herea on Monday defeated American Alana Smith 7-6 (7/4) 6-1, in the first round of the Austin 125 WTA tournament in Austin, Texas, prize money USD 115,000.
It took wild card recipient Herea,19, ranked 775th, almost two hours of play (1 h 52 min) to get the victory.
Smith, 25, ranked 390th, had two set points at the end of the first set at of 6-5, but Herea managed the break and won in the tiebreak.
For her performance so far in Austin, Herea won USD 2,000 dollars and 15 WTA singles points, and her next opponent will be the Dutch Anouk Koevermans, 21, ranked 207th , for the first time.
