Romanian tennis player Jaqueline Cristian qualified, for the first time, for the third round of the US Open tournament, the last Grand Slam of the year, on Thursday, in New York, after defeating US Ashlyn Krueger, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, agerpres reports.
Jaqueline Cristian (aged 27, WTA's 50th) secured victory after one hour and 46 minutes.
Krueger (aged 21, WTA's 38th) dominated the first set, but the Romanian took control of the next two in their first-ever meeting.
While the winner count was close (20-19 for Jaqueline), the US player made more unforced errors (32-23).
The next opponent of the Romanian national will be the winner of the event between US Amanda Anisimova (this year's Wimbledon finalist) and Australian Maya Joint.
Jaqueline Cristian, who had never made it past the first round in her previous two US Open appearances, secured a 237,000 USD paycheck and 130 WTA points.
