Romania's men's sabre team won silver medals on Monday at the European Fencing Championships Under-23 in Antalya (Turkey) after being defeated by Italy 45-42 in the final.
The team composed of Rares Ailinca, Alexandru Zmau, Radu Nitu and Vlad Covaliu defeated Austria 45-32 in the first round, Ukraine 45-35 in the quarterfinals and France 45-43 in the semifinals.
Hungary completed the podium after a 45-33 win over France in the small final.
In the women's team event, Romania ranked 7th.
The team of Andreea Gheorghe, Teodora Sofran, Emilia Corbu and Andreea Dinca defeated Austria 42-39 in the first round, but lost to Italy 22-45 in the quarterfinals.
In the tournament for places 5-8, the tricolore women defeated France 36-45, but beat Turkey 45-40.
This was Romania's third medal at the European Championships U23 in Antalya, after Vlad Covaliu won silver in men's sabre and Emma Sont took the bronze in women's epee.
Romania is represented by 22 athletes at the 2024 edition of the European Fencing Championships Under-23, taking place in Antalya (Turkey) from 1 to 4 June.
In 2023, at the European Championships Under-23 in Budapest, Romania ended the competition with four medals, one gold and three silver, all in sabre. Radu Nitu won gold in the men's event, Alexandru Zmau took the silver in men's individual, Sabina Martis won silver in women's, and the men's team won the silver medal as well.
