World and European double sculls champions Simona Radis and Ancuta Bodnar were awarded the World Rowing Women's Crew of the Year title by the International Rowing Federation, according to a press release sent to AGERPRES.

"Simona Radis and Ancuta Bodnar, members of the Romanian women's double sculls crew (W2x), have won the World Rowing Women's Crew of the Year award at the 2022 World Rowing Awards. The award was granted by World Rowing, the International Rowing Federation. It is for the first time in the 20-year history of the World Rowing Awards when such a trophy is won by rowers from Romania. The 'World Rowing Women's Crew of the Year' award is given annually to a female crew for outstanding achievements in rowing," the quoted press release mentions.

In the process of designating the winners, the first stage consists of nominations from the fans of this sport, which are then revised by the Athlete and Coach Awards Panel within the World Rowing. The Panel establishes afterward a short list of nominees and recommends a winner, where thereafter the Executive Committee makes the final decision.

Ancuta Bodnar became world champion this year on the day she turned 24, while Simona Radis won two gold medals in less than an hour, in the women's double sculls and women's 8+1 events, which represents a historic performance not only for Romania, but also for world rowing.
