Senator Traian Basescu, chairman of the People's Movement Party (opposition), former president of Romania (2004-2014) talked on Wednesday in Brussels with several European officials about many current EU topics alongside the need to speed up integration process of Romania into the Schengen area.
The PMP head mentions, among the topics he and the EU officials have addressed, "the situation in the Republic of Moldova and the unionist targets of the PUN (National Unity Party, ed. n.); the state of the Brexit negotiations and the way the matter of the foreign workers has been addressed; the political situation in Romania with clarifications on the laws of Justice; the security situation on the EU's eastern flank; the need to accelerate the integration process, with the Schengen topic included."
Moreover, senator Basescu stresses that he was "categorically" against the statement by MEP Cristian Preda on the suspension of Romania's right to vote in the European Council.
Cristian Preda asked on 29 November in the European Parliament's plenary sitting to suspend the right to vote of the Romanian gov't's officials in the EU Council, based on Art. 7 of the EU Treaty on grounds of "a serious crisis of the rule of law" generated by the amendments brought to the laws of Justice (ed. n.).
