Romania is a secure country under NATO's protection, Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance Mark Rutte assured on Wednesday during a meeting in Bucharest with Senate President Mircea Abrudean and a delegation of senators.

At the end of the meeting, Abrudean took to Facebook, stating that the messages of the NATO chief regarding the safety and security of the eastern flank "are very clear", agerpres reports.

"Romania is a secure country protected by NATO. Secretary General Mark Rutte assured us of this at today's meeting. The North Atlantic Treaty Alliance is constantly concerned with protecting the eastern flank and strengthening the Black Sea region, which must be a safe space for people, trade and investments. Communication is extremely important in everything we do in order to leave no room for interpretation, and the messages conveyed by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte regarding safety and security on the eastern flank are very clear," Mircea Abrudean wrote.

According to him, "Romania, for its part, is committed to doing everything depending on it."

"We have strengthened air defense and monitoring capabilities, when Parliament adopted additional legislation that allows Romanian institutions to act firmly against drone incidents. We are strengthening production capabilities, the most recent examples being the Hanwha, Aerospace and Rheinmetall factories. Security remains our top priority," the Senate President stressed.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte is in Bucharest on Wednesday and Thursday, on his first visit to Romania since taking over the helm of the Alliance. The visit of the top NATO official takes place in the context of his participation in the NATO Defense Industry Forum, an event intended to facilitate strategic dialogue with the defense industries of the allied states.
