Senate President Mircea Abrudean voiced hope that a date for local elections will be set as soon as possible, stressing that Bucharest residents should have a legitimately elected mayor without further delay.
He acknowledged that the legal deadline had been "somewhat exceeded" in August, but noted that there is no "expiration term" and that the election date must be agreed within the coalition, agerpres reports.
"Indeed, the legal deadline has been somewhat exceeded, but it is not a final deadline. It would not be the first time elections were not held within the three-month timeframe provided by current legislation. I believe this is not about what PNL, USR, or PSD wants, but about normality in the end. Bucharest residents should have a legitimately elected mayor as soon as possible. Right now, there is a lot of debate on the date of the elections, with each coalition party having a different view depending on its candidates and electoral interests," Abrudean told private broadcaster B1 TV.
According to him, the governing coalition was not formed for electoral purposes.
"In the end, it is important to emphasize that this governing coalition was not created with an electoral target. The coalition ensures Romania's stability, while elections and all the discussions, debates, and negotiations around local elections, not only in Bucharest but also elsewhere in the country, although the capital is the key focus must be settled separately. We should not therefore link the governing coalition to Bucharest's local elections, as I don't believe that would be healthy for Romania. I trust that, through dialogue, the coalition will reach a reasonable agreement so that the Government can set a date as soon as possible," the Senate president stated.
