Senate Chairman Calin Popescu-Tariceanu, attending on Monday, a sitting of the General Assembly of the Municipalities Association in Romania, declared that following the poll on December 11, Romanians have unequivocally elected a PSD-ALDE (the Social Democratic Party and the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats) majority, but that at the beginning of 2017, there was a velvet coup d'etat attempt.

"At the beginning of 2017 we witnessed a velvet coup d'etat attempt - I would call it - that, fortunately, the Constitutional Court clearly sanctioned, through two decisions that I would characterize as historic. Unfortunately, though, for over three months we have had an unprecedented political instability, in relation to the 11 December elections and their clear result. We are confronted to an almost daily offensive on behalf of the power institutions, against the institutions that resulted following Romanians' democratic vote. I am concerned that this permanent offensive questions the balance between the state powers and draws us further from the thing that seems essential to me: the debate around the economic, social, and foreign policy priorities," he mentioned.

Tariceanu mentioned that he learned from local authorities' representatives that many projects are blocked because of powerf institutions. He mentioned that this year the situation was made harder by the fact that establishing local budgets was delayed given that the state budget adoption was also postponed for a few weeks.

"Our joint objective is Romania's development, despite the power institutions' hindrance. I am openly telling you: Romanians will not find excuses if development projects are not put into practice. As they will not find excuses for the Government too, if it remains stuck in this political game, that is being played by certain institutions in Romania and certain authorities. (...) We have no reason not to enforce the political programme which we have won the elections with and the governing programme that earned the Government Parliament's vote of confidence," said the Senate's chairman.

"I was saying we had a tumultuous start, but, notwithstanding, it has been a good governing beginning, especially as regards the measures adopted by the Government led by Mr. Prime Minister Sorin Grindeanu," Tariceanu specified.
