Romanian tennis player Simona Halep on Wednesday said her quarter-final meet with Serena Williams in the women's singles event at the 2016 US Open, which she lost in three sets, was her best match ever against Williams.
"I think this was the best match that I ever had against her. I felt that I'm very close and I have chances to win. Like I said, I think my game was pretty good tonight. It's a good thing. I take it like with confidence, this match,'' Halep told reporters after being defeated by world's number one Serena Williams, 6-2 4-6 6-3 in two hours and 14 minutes.
"Well, I think it was a good match. I played well. I could play better in those moments when I had chances. But I think the level was pretty high. I'm okay with the way that I was fighting till the end. It's something normal now for me, so it's a good thing. She played really well. She is the best player, so her serve was huge today. It was tough. Is tough. I'm a little bit sad, but I have just to take the positives, because I have a lot going ahead," added Halep.
Reacția Simonei Halep după ÎNFRÂNGEREA în fața Serenei Williams
World's number five Halep said she feels better than in 2015, when she lost the semi-final to Italy's Flavia Pennetta after a poor performance, ''I feel definitely better that I played much better than last year in the semis. Semis is better than quarterfinals. Yeah, but they are two different things. Last year I was not playing in the semis and this year I lost in the quarters but I gave everything I could.''
The head-to-head statistics is now 8-1 favouring Williams, with Halep's only win against Williams being a 6-0 6-2 stunner in the groups stage of the 2014 WTA Finals in Singapore. Out of Williams's eight wins over Halep just three were three-set matches, in the second round of the 2011 Championships at Wimbledon, in the 2015 semi-finals of the Miami Open and now at Flushing Meadows.
