The visit to Romania by a Turkish parliamentary delegation led by Grand National Assembly Speaker Numan Kurtulmus reaffirmed the shared commitment to strengthening the Strategic Partnership and advancing pragmatic, results-oriented cooperation for the benefit of citizens in both countries, the Senate said on Wednesday.
The delegation held talks with Senate President Mircea Abrudean.
According to a Senate press release, the visit follows an invitation from Mircea Abrudean, with discussions reaffirming the "excellent" level of Romanian-Turkish bilateral relations, grounded in the Strategic Partnership between the two countries now marking its 15th anniversary and in solid cooperation within NATO and in the Black Sea region.
Mircea Abrudean and Numan Kurtulmus highlighted the importance of parliamentary dialogue as a key instrument for deepening political and sectoral cooperation, expressing their shared interest in intensifying such dialogue and continuing high-level exchanges.
The talks also addressed the development of economic and trade relations, cooperation in strategic sectors energy, transport and defence as well as strengthening connectivity in the Black Sea region.
"The significant potential of bilateral economic cooperation was underlined, with Turkey being Romania's main trading partner outside the European Union, with trade exchanges of approximately EUR 13 billion in 2025. At the same time, nearly 20,000 companies with Turkish capital are active in Romania, demonstrating the real potential of this relationship," the release highlights.
The President of the Senate also pointed to the important role played by the Turkish and Tatar communities in Romania, as well as by the Romanian community in Turkey, in strengthening ties between the two countries.
The Romanian delegation included senators Mihai Cotet, Niculina Stelea, Nicoleta Pauliuc and Titus Corlatean, MPs Adrian Solomon and Varol Amet, as well as Doru Liciu, chargé d'affaires ad interim at the Romanian Embassy in Turkey.
