Romanian tennis players Miriam Bulgaru and Gabriela Lee began with victories on Tuesday in the first round of the WTA 125 tournament in Querétaro (Mexico), which offers total prize money of USD 115,000.
Bulgaru (aged 27, WTA's no. 232nd), the fifth seed, defeated Mexican player Maria Fernanda Navarro Oliva (aged 29, WTA's no. 681st) 6-2, 6-3 after an hour and 24 minutes, despite committing 11 double faults.
Gabriela Lee (aged 30, WTA's no. 293rd), who has been called up to Romania's Billie Jean King Cup team for the qualifiers, overcame Russia's Elina Neplii (aged 27, WTA's no. 669th) with a score of 6-4, 6-4 after an hour and 25 minutes.
The two Romanian players have each secured USD 2,000 and 15 WTA points.
In the round of 16, Bulgaru will face Slovakia's Martina Okalova (aged 28, WTA no. 406), while Lee will go up against the tournament's top seed, Czech player Sara Bejlek (aged 19, WTA's no. 101st), both matches being first-time encounters.
