Romanian tennis player Monica Niculescu has qualified for the 2nd round of the US Open tournament, the last Grand Slam tournament of the year, after defeating French player Kristina Mladenovic, 6-3, 6-2. The event, which was interrupted on Tuesday evening because of the rain, at the score of 6-3, 1-1, for Niculescu, was resumed on Wednesday, when the Romanian player defeated Mladenovic (14th seed) in one hour and 51 minutes.
In the next round, Monica Niculescu is set to meet the winner of the event between another Romanian player, namely Ana Bogdan, and US Taylor Towsend. Monica Niculescu already secured a cheque worth 86,000 US dollars and 70 WTA points.
