Romanian tennis player Marius Copil succeeded on Wednesday night his most important career victory, 7-5 7-6 (2) versus Croatian Marin Cilic, the world's number six, in the first round of the ATP tournament in Basel (Switzerland), with total prizes of 1,948,420 euros.
For Copil (28 years old, 93rd in ATP), coming from qualifying rounds, it is the first victory against a top-10 opponent.
Copil won after an hour and 48 minutes versus the Croatian, aged 30 years, the score of the direct matches being now 2-2. Marius Copil succeeded in Basel at less than 21 aces, without committing any double mistakes. Cilic had only 4 aces and committed 6 double mistakes.
Copil has secured a 53,665 euros cheque and 110 ATP points. The next opponent will be the American Taylor Fritz (20 years old, 57th in ATP), who won the match versus the Swiss Henri Laaksonen 6-2 7-5.
