The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) released on Monday the latest ranking of the professional tennis players with the top-100 athletes keeping their position unchanged. Four Romanians are in the top-100 echelon; Simona Halep is the best positioned on spot 4, with a score of 5,228 points.
The other Romanians in WTA's Top-100 are Irina Begu - on position 29 with 1,531 points; Monica Niculescu - 38th with 1,301 points; and Sorana Cirstea - 79th with 787 points.
Germany's Angelique Kerber tops the list with 9,080 points, followed by Serena Williams (US) with 7,050 points and Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska - 5,600 points.
In early 2017 Romania's leading tennis players will compete in the Shenzhen (China) and Brisbane (Australia) tournaments. Simona Halep, Monica Niculescu and Sorana Cirstea are in the main draw of the Shenzhen competition where defending champion Agnieszka Radwanska is the top favorite (having taken over from 2015 winner Simona Halep).
Irina Begu starts the competition year at Brisbane, on January 1; Seed No. 1 of the Australian tournament is current world's best Angelique Kerber.
