TES FEST Yiddish International Theatre Festival returns for 10th edition in Bucharest

The 10th edition of the TES FEST Yiddish International Theatre Festival will take place from May 21 to 30 at the State Jewish Theatre.

"The State Jewish Theatre continues its mission to celebrate Yiddish cultural identity by marking an important milestone this year, the 185th anniversary of the birth of Avram Goldfaden, the founder of professional Jewish theatre. Representatives of Yiddish culture from around the world, along with the State Jewish Theatre, will celebrate this important moment during the 10th edition of the TES FEST Yiddish International Theatre Festival," according to a TES press release sent to AGERPRES on Tuesday.

At this year's edition, professional Yiddish-language theatre troupes from the USA, Israel, Poland, as well as world-renowned klezmer music performers, will bring the spirit of Jewish culture and the Yiddish language to audiences in Bucharest.

The event will open on May 21 at 7:00 PM with the premiere of the play Song of Songs, a production by the State Jewish Theatre.

TES FEST is aimed at a wide audience of all ages and seeks to open a gateway to understanding through specific forms of artistic expression, thereby contributing to cultural understanding, acceptance, and connection, the organisers said.

The main purpose of the State Jewish Theatre is to preserve and promote Yiddish-language theatre and culture, to spread culture through the knowledge of language, literature, and traditions, and has supported multiculturalism for over seven decades, the press release also reads.

Festival highlights include the following performances: Duet Chorny and Ghergus - From Traditional Yiddish Songs to Cabaret - a concert by Efim Chorny and Suzana Ghergus (Republic of Moldova); From Shtetl to New York - The Art of the Yiddish Song - Jerusalem Lyric Studio (Israel); The Golden Bride - a Yiddish musical theater performance by the Yiddishpiel Theater (Israel); Songs from the Ghetto - a musical theatre show by the Jewish Theatre of Poland; Ashkenazi Dance - a traditional Jewish dance workshop specific to Eastern European Jews, led by Mark Kovnatsky (Germany).

Also scheduled are conferences including: Avram Goldfaden - From the Yiddish Musical to Variety Theatre; Conference-Concert: The Spirit and Tradition of Yiddish in the Works of Avram Goldfaden.

The 10th edition of the Yiddish International Theater Festival TES FEST will conclude on May 30 with the Ashkenazi Dance workshop at 11:00 AM, led by Mark Kovnatsky (Germany), and a concert of contemporary Jewish songs, a co-production of the State Jewish Theatre (Romania) and Mark Kovnatsky, at 7:00 PM.

Tickets for all TES FEST events can be purchased exclusively through the mystage network, both online and at the theatre's box office.

The Yiddish International Theatre Festival is organised by the Bucharest City Hall through the State Jewish Theatre, with the support of the Romanian Cultural Institute, the Romanian Government through the Department for Interethnic Relations, and the Federation of Jewish Communities of Romania.
