The coalition of NGOs for the Citizen demands from the political parties PSD, PNL, USR and UDMR a "firm" commitment to appoint competent and politically neutral persons to head the Ombudsman and the other institutions responsible for defending the fundamental rights.
"We are addressing you, representatives of the parliamentary parties involved in the negotiation of a democratic and pro-European majority, to request your firm and unequivocal commitment to strengthening the institutions that defend fundamental rights. A concrete first step is to guarantee the appointment of a neutral, honest and competent person to the position of the Ombudsman", the Resource Center for Public Participation (CeRe) say on Wednesday in a letter addressed to political parties, issued to AGERPRES.
At the same time, CeRe expresses its concern over the prospect that the only political opposition will remain "even the extremist formations", a context in which it is "essential" to have strong and independent institutions that defend the rights of citizens.
"The results of the parliamentary elections led to a significant presence of extremist political parties in the Romanian Parliament. In this context, we welcome the commitment of the democratic parties to form a majority that will guarantee the European future of Romania, what we call a sanitary cord against extremism. In the same time, we are worried about the prospect that the only political opposition will remain the extremist groups. We think it is essential to have strong and independent institutions that defend the rights of citizens, institutions capable of attracting the attention of the government and the political majority when there is a risk of violation of fundamental rights", according to the quoted source.
The same source informs the mandate of the Ombudsman ended on June 26, 2024 and the current legislature avoided initiating the procedure to appoint a new person, allowing the new Parliament to do so.
"The Ombudsman has an essential role for defending the rights and freedoms of natural persons. Also, the Ombudsman has the constitutional prerogative to raise directly exceptions to the unconstitutionality of laws and ordinances", mentions CeRe.
