A total lunar eclipse will take place during the night of 7 to 8 September, according to the "Admiral Vasile Urseanu" Astronomical Observatory.

The Moon will be located in the constellation Aquarius, and throughout the night from Sunday to Monday, the planet Saturn will appear to the left of the Moon.

'The phenomenon begins with the Moon entering the penumbra at 18:28, when the Moon will still be below the horizon. As the Earth's penumbra is not very opaque, the Moon's colour will not change significantly at the start. In Bucharest, the Moon will rise at 19:37, by which time it will already be in the Earth's shadow,' the Observatory's website, astro-urseanu.ro, reports.

The most spectacular part of the event is the totality, the period when the Moon is completely within the Earth's shadow and takes on its characteristic reddish hue. Totality begins at 20:30, reaches its maximum at 21:21, and ends at 21:52. During totality, the Moon will be relatively low in the sky, towards the east-southeast.

The eclipse will end at 23:55.

According to representatives of the Astronomical Observatory, the next lunar eclipse visible from Romania will occur on 28 August 2026.
