UDMR (Democratic Union of Hungarians of Romania) chair Kelemen Hunor believes that Klaus Iohannis's resignation from the office of president would have been the right option.

Asked on Prima TV private television broadcaster why the coalition leaders do not have the courage to ask Klaus Iohannis to resign, the UDMR leader said that he would convey this message to the president if he had the opportunity.

"I have said this publicly several times. It is not about having or not having courage. I have said it whenever I have been asked, I said yes, it would have been correct, it would have been ideal, it would have been good for him to retire after the Senate chair was elected. (...) From a political point of view, this would be the right option, the correct thing to do at this point, it would help us all," said Kelemen Hunor.

According to him, "this tension will be permanent until the elections."

"People, on the one hand, have a hard time understanding why the elections were canceled, because there were few explanations and, even if they see all kinds of reports, journalistic investigations, they still say: 'He stayed there after the elections, it wasn't mandatory,' because the Constitution says it very clearly: if the office becomes vacant, the Senate president comes in. It's also true that the Constitution does say that elections must be organized 90 days after the vacancy, but that's exactly where we are today, tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, we are in the 90-day period. And there would be no problem," the UDMR leader said.

Asked in the same context if "relations have warmed up" between him and the Senate chair, Ilie Bolojan, Kelemen Hunor replied: "We work well within the coalition."

"We didn't have conflicts, we didn't have unnecessary disputes, yes. We work well within the coalition. (...) He came from Oradea. We had conflicts related to the Bihor and Oradea counties, before, but at the national level we overcome local conflicts, we do not raise them to the national level. If we are to discuss Bihor, we will discuss it at some point, but we have not discussed it," the UDMR president opined.
