Soldiers of the 2nd Getica Infantry Division at the Cincu, Smardan and Babdag training grounds attending the Saber Guardian 17 multinational exercise on Tuesday will commemorate the centennial of the Marasti Battle.
"On Tuesday morning at 03:50hrs, local, soldiers with the 8th Alexandru Ioan Cuza LAROM Brigade and the 285th Aurel Vlaicu Artillery Battalion taking part in the Getica Saber 17 multinational exercise at the Getica National Training Centre at Cincu will fire salvoes to commemorate the valiant actions of our forerunners, who one century ago, on July 11, 1917 were starting at the same hour their offensive at Marasti," the National Defence Ministry (MApN) reported on Monday in a press statement.
The Marasti Battle was the first big victory in the history of the Romanian Army, in which 1,469 Romanian soldiers were killed and 3,052 wounded. The Marasti offensive started on July 11, 1917 at 03:50hrs and ended on July 19 under the command of General Alexandru Averescu, according to MApN.
