Race walker Claudia Stef and canoeists Leonid Carp and Andrei Stefan Strat (C2 - 1,000m), tested positive for meldonium, will nevertheless compete in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee (COSR) announced on Wednesday. COSR Secretary General Ioan Dobrescu explained that the drug concentrations were low in their cases, and the World Anti-Doping Agency WADA notified the Committee on Monday that their suspensions were lifted. The COSR now has to notify the International Olympic Committee, and ask WADA to do the same, as the June 10 deadline for registering athletes for the Olympic Games is overdue.
High jumper Mihai Donisan also stands a chance to compete in Rio, depending on the result of a sample testing required by WADA. The whole Romanian canoe and kayak squad tested positive for meldonium; the list announced in May includes - besides Carp and Strat - Roxana Borha and Elena Meroniac (women's K2), and Traian Neagu, Catalin Turceag, Daniel Burciu and Petrus Gavrila (men's K4), whose performances would have qualified them for the games. High jumper Daniela Stanciu and marathon runner Nicolae Soare are in the same situation.
