Eight canine teams of Ukraine's National Customs Service, Odessa Customs Office, completed on Friday, at the Canine Teams Training Centre of the Romanian Customs Authority (CIEC-AVR), a training course offered by the Romanian Customs Authority (AVR) for the detection of cigarettes and tobacco products, weapons and ammunition, drugs and cash, according to AVR , informs Agerpres.
The training was provided by AVR in partnership with the European Union Advisory Mission for Civil Security Sector Reform Ukraine (EUAM Ukraine) and was carried out with support from JTI Romania, which has been supporting the canine teams of the Romanian customs for almost 15 years and contributed to the establishment of CIEC - AVR.
The objective of this action was to improve the professional skills of service dogs and customs officers working as dog handlers at the EU's external border for the detection of cigarettes and tobacco products, weapons and ammunition, drugs and cash.
The canine teams operate at customs offices throughout the country and are part of the operational force used by AVR. Since the beginning of 2024, with help from canine teams, 543,440 cigarettes, 98 kg of tobacco were detected, and fines applied to the tune of RON 2.3 million.
