Romania fully supports the leadership role assumed by the European Union in terms of limiting climate change and the joint commitment of the member states to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions, President Klaus Iohannis said on Monday at the Climate Implementation Summit within the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP27) which takes place in Egypt in Sharm El-Sheikh.
"We must ensure an orderly climate transition, with multiple benefits: investments in research-development-innovation, the development of the green economy and the creation of jobs. In addition, access to energy at affordable prices can be ensured through investments in production capacities of low-carbon energy, in resilient energy networks and by ensuring an adequate regulatory framework for renewable energies. The cost of climate inaction far exceeds the cost of action. Climate change generates economic and non-economic loss and damage around the world," said the head of state.
He emphasized that the war on the European continent that has global effects, energy insecurity, food shortages and economic instability should not distract attention from climate change.
"On the contrary, limiting climate change is essential for addressing many of these challenges and for protecting the well-being of present and future generations. Climate change is not an abstract concept, but an everyday reality, with consequences for human health, nature and the economy," specified Iohannis.
The President pointed out that Romania faced a severe drought this year, with negative implications on water supply, food production and electricity generation.
"Adaptation efforts are crucial for increasing the resilience of both societies and ecosystems facing climate risks," said Klaus Iohannis.
The head of state conveyed that the strongest allies in the fight against climate change are the citizens.
"We have to prepare them and give them strength to face this fight," Iohannis declared.
He said that young people in Romania are very motivated to act in terms of limiting climate change, and this dedication should be a source of inspiration for everyone.
"I strongly believe in the power of education to generate climate-friendly behavior. Education and research systems must be better aligned with climate goals and equip our citizens, especially young people, with the necessary skills in an economy and a society with low carbon dioxide emissions," the head of state also said.AGERPRES
