The budget of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been supplemented with 43.2 million lei (900,000 euros) to ensure the payment of Romania's annual contribution to the budget of the EU financial instrument "European Peace Facility" (EPF), informs the Government in a press release, told Agerpres.
Currently, Romania's contribution for 2022 is approximately 6.8 million euros. The EPF budget for 2021-2027 is 5 billion euros, of which, for 2022, 540 million euros have been allocated (of which 130 million euros are for pillar I - military operations).
"As a result of the military invasion of Ukraine by the Russian armed forces, the European Union's solidarity towards this state was also manifested through concrete support measures. These included 5 assistance packages, worth 2.5 billion euros, which will be financed through Pillar II for the duration of EPF's operation. In order to manage this situation, it was decided at the EPF level to increase the budget for 2022. Following this decision, the total budget of the EPF for 2022 increased to 583.52 million euros, of which the assistance measures represent 458.68 million euros. In this context, Romania's contribution increases to 7.565 million euros, with approximately 900 thousand euros compared to the initial planning," the Government's press release shows.
The amount will be allocated from the budgetary reserve fund at the Government's disposal. The due date for the payment of the contribution is January 16, 2023.
"This financial instrument was created to strengthen the capacity of the armed forces of the partner states both from the Eastern Neighbourhood and from the Western Balkans to face the current security challenges, all the more relevant in the context of Russia's aggression against Ukraine," states the Government.
