Francophone Games: Romanian athletes win three new gold medals

Romanian athletes won five new medals, three gold, one silver and one bronze, at the Francophone Games in Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of Congo) on Monday, told Agerpres.

The Tricoloures continued to dominate the wrestling competitions, winning gold medals through Maria Larisa Nitu (72 kg) and Catalina Axente (76 kg), but also silver through Mihai Nicolae Palaghia (free wrestling, 92 kg) and bronze - Adina Ionela Irimia (68 kg).

In the 97 kg category (freestyle), Alexandru Besliu ranked 5th, after missing the bronze medal.

The Romanian table tennis team also won gold, after a 2-0 win in the final against Tunisia. Andrei-Eduard Ionescu beat Youssef Ben Attia 3-1 and Elena-Adriana Zaharia defeated Fadwa Garci 3-0.

In the semi-finals, Romania beat Lebanon 2-0. Ionescu defeated Saadeddine El Habachi 3-0, while Zaharia won by the same score against Mariam El Habech.

In athletics, in the men's 10,000m event, Nicolae Alexandru Soare ranked sixth with a time of 29 min 28 sec 86/100.

In the women's 100m, Marina Andreea Baboi was fourth in the third heat with 12 sec 03/100, but missed qualifying for the final after ranking fifth in the second semi-final with 11 sec 97/100.

Romania remains first in the overall medal standings with 7 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze, followed by Morocco (4-3-3) and Cameroon (3-3-6) etc.

Gold medals went to Razvan Marian Kovacs (freestyle wrestling, 57 kg), Maxim Vasilioglo (freestyle wrestling, 74 kg), Beatrice Ionela Ferent (wrestling, 53 kg), Amina Roxana Capezan (wrestling, 65 kg), Maria Larisa Nitu (wrestling, 72 kg), Catalina Axente (wrestling, 76 kg) and the mixed table tennis team (Andrei-Eduard Ionescu, Elena-Adriana Zaharia).

The silver medals went to Ukrainian-born Kateryna Zhydachevska (wrestling, 59 kg) and Mihai Nicolae Palaghia (freestyle wrestling, 92 kg).

Bronze medals went to Stefan Ionut Coman (freesyle wrestling, 65 kg), Ana-Maria Pîrvu (wrestling, 50 kg), Adina Ionela Irimia (wrestling, 68 kg) and Catalin Buta (cycling, long-distance race).

Romania is participating with a delegation of 76 people, including 57 athletes (athletics, women's basketball, freestyle wrestling and African wrestling, road cycling, table tennis and judo), in the 9th edition of the Francophone Games, which take place from 28 July to 6 August in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo.
