Some of the oldest dated 'martisoare' - red-and-white spring lucky charms - in Romania will go on display in Alba Iulia as part of the temporary exhibition 'History-laden Martisoare, 1879-1940' at the Palace of the Transylvania Princes Museum.

Considered by the organizers "a genuine foray into Romanian history, through witnesses as small and silent as they are valuable, beyond the metal they were made of", the exhibition will be open to visitors between February 24 and March 18.

"The spring amulets whereby the Romanians contributed to financing the country's naval and air defense, those dating from the interwar royalty period, featuring the portraits of the sovereigns of Romania, as well as some of folkloric or Art-Nouveau inspiration are gathered in an exceptional private collection made available by Capt. Anghel Georgian and showcased for the first time in this format at the Palace of the Transylvania Princes Museum. A passionate collector and member of the Tomis Constanta Philatelists Association, Anghel Georgian has exhibited both in Romania and abroad, being a regular at museums throughout the country," the release states.

His collection includes the oldest dated martisoare in Romania, some of which can also be admired now in Alba Iulia.

The exhibition will open on Monday, with the collector also attending and presenting to the public the volume "Martisoare of the Romanian National Fleet 1913 - Anghel Georgian Collection", a photo-documentary album produced by the 'Teodor T. Burada' Constanta County Cultural Center, which explores the extensive national manifestation of 1913 in support of the Romanian fleet.

"Whether they evoke folklore and traditions, or illustrate the history of interwar Romania, royalty or the country's defense, these small but precious testimonies of olden times combine the protective with the aesthetic function, encompassing also that of 'public utility'. How exactly? We invite you to discover by visiting the exhibition 'History-laden Martisoare, 1879-1940', starting from Monday, February 24, until March 18, inclusive," the organizers said.
