President Klaus Iohannis said in a message on Thursday conveyed to the Democracy Summit organized by US President Joe Biden, that Romania is determined to prevent and combat all negative phenomena that undermine democratic trust.

"We fully embrace the concept and purpose of the Summit, as it is our duty to uphold the democratic values and principles we all cherish. Global coordination is also vital. Romania is committed to preventing and combating all negative phenomena that undermine democratic trust, thus contributing to building democratic resilience. The results of our Presidency of the Community of Democracies for the period 2019-2022 eloquently reflect our determination to play an active role in this regard," the head of state said in a message conveyed to the summit.

Klaus Iohannis stressed that progress in the field of human rights is a key component in ensuring the safety and security of communities, individuals and institutions against anti-Semitism, xenophobia, radicalization and hate speech.

"We are committed to dedicating resources and training programs, but also to developing best practices for the proper investigation and prosecution of hate crimes," Iohannis said.

The head of state also pointed out that supporting women's political participation and empowerment is a commitment that Romania is making, both nationally and abroad.

"Our country's first National Action Plan, accompanied by a national awareness campaign, will contain a series of measures regarding the labor market, education, work-life balance, decision-making and gender mainstreaming," Iohannis said.

He specified that another priority for Romania is to prevent and combat trafficking in human beings, "an objective that is impossible to achieve in isolation."

"As such, Romania is committed to cooperating with all interested internal actors, including civil society," President Iohannis said.

The head of state stressed that the implementation of measures to strengthen institutional capacity in the fight against corruption is essential for Romania, not only at the national level, but also externally.

"Strategic areas such as health and the environment are major concerns for future generations. (...) The time has come for us to coordinate better in order to build stronger human rights-based systems. And democracy offers the best climate for this purpose," Iohannis concluded.
