Justice Minister Alina Gorghiu announced on Monday that a new detention unit with a capacity of 196, designed according to European standards, has been completed and will soon be commissioned at the Rahova Penitentiary in Bucharest.
"About 1,300 people are currently serving custodial sentences at the Rahova Penitentiary. The new detention unit with a capacity of 196 is intended for people who serve custodial sentences in semi-open and open prison conditions and who were selected to carry out gainful activities at various work points. This is the result of quality works carried out at the confinement rooms in one of the penitentiary sections and also of the repurposing of production workshops in detention facilities," Gorghiu told a press conference at the Rahova Penitentiary.
According to the Justice minister, the investment was worth over one million RON.
Gorghiu said that the project entailed the creation of 108 new accommodation places and the modernization of another 88, in an investment worth a total of 1,028,997 RON, VAT included, and that the new detention facility will most likely be commissioned on November 1.
