Adapting vocational training programmes, creating a fair and predictable legislative framework and supporting employers to increase competitiveness were among the issues addressed on Tuesday by Labour Minister Simona Bucura Oprescu at a meeting with officials of the American Chamber of Commerce in Romania (AmCham).

"There is a need for actual solutions that support both employees and employers for the development of a modern, flexible and competitive labour market. Given the circumstances, the dialogue of the Ministry of Labour, Family, Youth and Social Solidarity with its social partners, whether trade unions or employers' organisations, is essential. Major issues regarding the labour market - such as adapting vocational training programmes, creating a fair and predictable legislative framework and supporting employers to increase competitiveness - were addressed today by Minister Simona Bucura Oprescu at a meeting with AmCham officials," the ministry reported in a social media post.

The minister added that a common priority is to ensure the maintenance of competitive advantages for the labour market in Romania. "We have a direct and solution-oriented dialogue with AmCham, because it is essential to respond quickly and efficiently to the needs of employers, and in that regard the professional training of employees must be in accordance with the current market demands. I want to find out directly from employers the problems they face and to work together to find the best solutions that are fair to both employees and employers," Simona Bucura-Oprescu is quoted as saying in the post.

According to the ministry, the main issues discussed at the meeting were: Directive (EU) 2023/970 on the principle of equal pay for equal work or work of equal value between men and women, updating the legislation on the authorisation of temporary work agencies - cutting through red tape and protecting workers' rights, legislative measures to improve health and safety at work, amending the Labour Code and the Law on Safety and Health at Work - preventing harassment and improving working conditions, employment of people with disabilities - simplification of reporting obligations for companies, the status of non-EU foreigners - adjusting the legislation to the demands of the Romanian economy.

Established in 1993 and with over 580 member companies, AmCham's priorities are to promote a favourable business climate in Romania, develop human capital, increase labour productivity, a coherent legislative framework cutting through red tape, support investment and collaboration with the authorities
