The monument dedicated to Prince Rainier III of Monaco, made up of a statue of the prince but also an ensemble with characters from the circus world, was inaugurated on Wednesday in the presence of Mayor of Bucharest Gabriela Firea and Princess Stephanie of Monaco. "I would like to thank for this homage brought to my father and for his love and passion for the circus, for what it can bring us," the princess stated during the ceremony held in Circus Park, Bucharest.
Gabriela Firea highlighted that unveiling a monumental ensemble, a work of many years, represents a special moment which expresses once again the high regard for cultural values. "It is a homage brought to Prince Rainier III of Monaco, the founder of the international circus in Monte Carlo. The festival in Monte Carlo is renowned in the entire world and artists with the Globus Circus have won several trophies over time at this international festival. (...) Despite the fact that, similar to any big European city, we are up against a lot of issues as regards the infrastructure or the constructions or increasing the quality of life of citizens, I don't believe we have the right to forget, not even for a second, our moral duties in relation to culture," the Mayor stated.
Prince Radu appreciated that the moment is an opportunity to bring "a respectful homage" to a man at the helm of his country for half a century who at the same time provided a model of the way in which society can be helped, by upholding domains such as the science and the arts. "It is probably for the first time in our contemporary history, after World War II, that the statue of a royal figure from an European dynasty is unveiled in our Capital. It is in such stark contrast with the statues erected between 1948-1989 that it goes without saying that today is a new beginning, owing of course, to the city's officials and to those who decide the faith of Romania's Capital city. (...) Through his lengthy reign, of half a century, the Monegasque monarch left a deep trace in the European art and culture," he stated.
The unveiling of the monument was preceded by a short show of the Globus Circus performers who presented an acrobatic number and a horse training one.
