Natural increase in Romania remained negative (-10,355) in January 2023, with the number of deaths being 1.7 times higher than that of live births, show data published on Wednesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
According to INS, in January 2023 there were 13,881 births, up 651 from December 2022. The number of deaths in January 2023 was 24,236 (12,663 men and 11,573 women), up 532 (262 men and 270 women) from December 2022. The number of deaths of children under the age of one reported in January 2023 was 85, down 17 from December 2022.
In January 2023, 67.1% of the total number of deaths occurred in people aged at least 70 - 10,061 deaths, or 41.5%, in people aged 80 and over; 6,194, or 25.6% in people aged 70-79, and 18.0% or 4,369 in people aged 60-69. At the opposite end, the fewest deaths were recorded in the age groups 0-4 years (100), 20-29 years (87) and 5-19 years (76).
Most deaths in January 2023 were the result of circulatory system diseases (13,345, or 55.1%); tumors (4,101, or 16.9%), and respiratory diseases (2,688, or 11.1%).
In January 2023, 4,904 marriages were registered, 756 fewer than in December 2022. The number of divorces pronounced by final court decisions and under Law 202/2010 was 657 in January 2023, 1,643 fewer than in December 2022.
The number of live births reported in January 2023 was down 288 y-o-y. The natural increase was negative both in January 2023 (-10,355) and in January 2022 (-12,146). The number of deaths in January 2023 was down 2,079 from January 2022. In January 2023 as against January 2022, there were 733 fewer deaths caused by respiratory diseases, 1,553 fewer deaths caused by circulatory system diseases but 237 more deaths from tumors.
The number of deaths in children under the age of one in January 2023 was down 18 from January 2022.
