Over 871,000 non-resident tourists in tourist accommodation structures in Romania in H1
The total number of non-resident tourists staying in tourist accommodation structures, such as hotels and hostels, was 871,600 in the first half of the current year, their expenditure amounting to 2.222 billion lei, with an average of almost 2,550 lei/person, according to data the National Institute of Statistics (INS) released on Friday.
In this context, business trips (including participation in congresses, conferences, courses, fairs and exhibitions) were the main reason for the stay spent by 52.8% of non-resident tourists in Romania during the period under review, their expenditure accounting for 59.1% of total expenditure.
According to the source, among the non-resident tourists who arrived in Romania from January to June, 47.2% travelled for private purposes, and the expenses accounted for 40.9% of the total expenses. Private trips include: trips for holidays, shopping, cultural and sports events, visiting friends and relatives, medical treatment, religion, transit and other activities.
Also, 41.6% organised their stay through a travel agency, 37.9% chose to organise their holiday themselves, 12.8% opted for other ways of organising their trip, while 7.7% organised their trip both on their own and through a travel agency.
The main means of transport used to arrive in Romania in the first semester of 2023 was by plane (75.9%), while 16.6% used their own cars, 5.2% coaches and buses, 1.3% river boats, 0.3% train and 0.7% other means of transport (rented cars, motorbikes, etc.).
Compared to the second quarter of 2022, in the same period of this year, the total number of non-resident tourists staying in collective tourist accommodation establishments was 515,100, with expenditure of 1.276 billion lei (2,479.2 lei/person on average).
Business trips (including participation in congresses, conferences, courses, fairs and exhibitions) were the main reason for the stay of 49.3% of non-resident tourists to Romania, their expenditure representing 56.9% of the total expenditure. In the margin of this expenditure, in the second quarter of 2023, the main share was represented by money for accommodation (50.8%), followed by expenditure in restaurants and bars (19.6%) and shopping (13.5%).
More than half of non-resident tourists arriving in Romania (50.7%) travelled for private purposes (holidays, shopping, cultural and sports events, visiting friends and relatives, medical treatment, religion, transit and other activities).
Of the total expenditure for private purposes in the second quarter of this year, the main share was for accommodation (47.9%), followed by restaurants and bars (18.2%) and shopping (15.3%).
INS data reveals, at the same time, in the analysed period, 44.2% of tourists organised their stay through a travel agency, 37.7% on their own, 10.9% through other means of travel planning, while 7.2% organised their trip both on their own and through a travel agency.
In addition, air travel was the main means of transport used to arrive in Romania in the second quarter (73.1%), while 17.3% travelled by their own cars, 6.3% by coaches and buses, 2.2% by river boats, 0.3% by train and 0.8% by other means of transport (rented cars, motorbikes, etc.).
