Parliament on Wednesday approved in a joint session the establishment of the joint parliamentary inquiry committee of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate for the "investigation of the real estate mafia," starting from the Nordis case [a recent case of massive fraud in real estate - editor's note].

There were 256 votes cast "in favour" of the creation of the joint committee and two "against." The proposal belonged to the PNL (National Liberal Party) parliamentary group and it will have 15 members.

Among the objectives of the committee there will be the identification of illegal ways of selling dwellings in the project stage or of selling the same dwelling to two or more people, starting from the Nordis case; the identification of ways of legally reducing the VAT owed by real estate developers for built or under construction buildings sold to consumers; identifying the mechanisms by which real estate developers "devalue" the commercial companies through which they carry out constructions and subsequently bankrupt them, transferring the damage to the good faith buyers.

The committee will also identify the reasons why the National Authority for Consumer Protection does not intervene to stop real estate fraud, as well as the "sweeper" mechanisms by which dwellings promised to good faith buyers are subsequently resold through phantom companies that buy real estate assets after the bankruptcy of the companies that made the sales promises to the good faith buyers in the first place.

The committee may verify any other aspect that arises during its activity and that is relevant to the achievement of its objectives.
