The cogeneration plant on the Petromidia refinery platform, which has entered the operational testing phase, brings energy autonomy for the largest refinery in Romania, while also contributing to increasing the stability of the National Energy Grid, according to Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja.

"Investments, investments, investments. That is what we promised and that is what we are doing. The cogeneration plant on the Petromidia refinery platform has been completed, and yesterday (Thursday) it already entered the operational testing phase. An investment of USD 164 million made through the Romanian-Kazakh Energy Investment Fund, a project that we managed to unlock and complete after years. The plant brings energy autonomy to the largest refinery in the country, while also contributing to increasing the stability of the National Energy Grid," the minister wrote in a social media post on Friday morning.

He added that it is a project that uses the most up-to-date technologies, such as SGT-750 gas turbines from Siemens, a first in Romania. With an installed capacity of almost 80MW, the new plant will fully secure the electricity consumption needs for Petromidia, thus reducing the pressure on the national energy grim.

"This is a model of vision that I see increasingly more often in companies operating in Romania: developing investment projects to produce the energy necessary for their own consumption. What does that mean? There is money left for other investment of these companies, new jobs can be created, as the actual competitiveness of companies increases by reducing energy costs," Burduja said.

According to him, by making the plant operational, about USD 11 million will get to the national budget annually in the form of taxes. At the same time, the new Midia Navodari plant is also connected to the national energy grid and can deliver energy for Romanians and Romanian companies.

"But, beyond figures, such investment sends an important message: Romania must remain a stable and attractive environment for investments. Those who are already here must have every reason to continue their development and expand their activity, which can only bring benefits to Romanians - through taxes paid by investors, new jobs and the economic development of local communities. At the same time, those who analyse the Romanian market at this moment must see an open country that offers opportunities and where institutions function, and laws apply. A country that continues its path towards modernisation and does not return to darkness," according to Burduja.

KazMunayGas announced on Thursday evening that the new cogeneration plant on the Petromidia platform underwent its first technological tests, with the commissioning of the turbines being attended by the Chairman of the Board of Directors of KazMunayGas, Askhat Khassenov, the ambassador of Kazakhstan to Romania, Yerlik Ali; Chairman of the of the SAPE Directorate Bogdan Stanescu, and the General Manager of Calik Enerji, Temel Kotil.

General contractor in the field of engineering, procurement, and construction, Calik Enerji, along with Rompetrol Energy's specialists, will continue tests on the synchronization of the gas turbines with the National Energy System and integration of the Cogeneration Plant with the Petromidia refinery in Navodari.

The investment amount is USD 164 million. The cogeneration plant will generate over 70 MW per hour, and will fully assure the energy needs of the Petromidia refinery.

The project is implemented through the Kazakh-Romanian Energy Investment Fund (KREIF). The Fund was established in October 2018 by KMG International (80%), KazMunayGas subsidiary, and Societatea de Administrare a Participatiilor in Energie - SAPE (representative of the Romanian government, 20%)
