PM Ciolacu: Lifting CVM confirms that the rule of law in Romania is consolidated
Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said on Friday that the Control and Verification Mechanism (CVM) having been closed is a decision that confirms that the rule of law in Romania is consolidated and strong, which is an additional argument supporting Romania's accession to the Schengen area.
"After the political decision taken at the European level last year all the procedural steps regarding the lifting of the CVM were completed, and Romania is now officially among the other European states. It is a decision that confirms that the rule of law in Romania is consolidated and strong. And that is an additional argument that supports our accession to the Schengen area," Ciolacu told an event on the priorities of the justice system and the report on the rule of law in a national and European context.
He said that many of the objections in the past were related precisely to the independence of the judiciary, noting that "lifting the CVM is a guarantee that Romania has made significant progress in that direction".
"It is very important that we do not rest on this success. It is our duty, all of us, to make sure that the reforms continue and that the progress made so far is irreversible. It is our responsibility to continue to engage in order to strengthen the rule of law, to fight against corruption and promote transparency within state bodies. As the prime minister, I want to reaffirm my commitment to supporting all the necessary reforms that respect European values and the principles of the rule of law," added Ciolacu.
He also said that "Romania is a reliable partner inside the European Union" and that "CVM having been closed is a big step forward".
