President-elect Nicusor Dan announced that negotiations with political parties to form the new government will begin on Tuesday, mentioning that he still wants Ilie Bolojan as prime minister, but said that there are "four parties at the table, plus the minorities," so there will be discussions, Agerpres reports.
He also commented on the possibility of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) staying in opposition, saying that politicians have the responsibility to engage and solve the problems of society, not to abandon their duties.
When asked on Saturday when he was going to begin negotiations with the parties to form the government, Nicusor Dan said on Tuesday.
He reiterated that Ilie Bolojan remains his preferred choice for prime minister. 'Yes, but of course there are four parties at the table, plus the minorities, and there will be a discussion,' the president-elect added.
When asked how he would convince PSD members, especially since several Social Democrats have expressed a desire to remain in opposition, Nicusor Dan said: 'I believe that we, as politicians, are here to serve society. I believe that is what we claim to do, and that is what we should do.'
'At this moment, society is facing a fiscal crisis, and so in my opinion, it is the responsibility of each of us to engage, not to withdraw, to engage in solving the problem society is dealing with. That is the role of politics,' he added.
Asked whether he would prefer to appoint a PSD prime minister or lead a minority government with PSD in opposition, Nicusor Dan replied that those are not the only two options.
'I very much want a stable government, and it is not just what I want, it is also an economic issue. When you project stability, the interest rates at which Romania has to borrow will be lower, and investors will be more inclined to come to Romania because they won't fear that a minority government might collapse in four or eight months. That is why I believe it is important to have a government with a parliamentary majority. Once again, I think it is an act of responsibility for all parties to want to pull Romania out of this situation,' the president-elect added.
