Modern justice means a fair justice act, carried out within a reasonable deadline, so that we must remain firm in combating corruption, the Prosecutor General of Romania, Augustin Lazar, stated on Wednesday. "Prosecutors have several priorities in mind. One of them is well known: combating corruption is an activity that we started long ago and we must continue it while remaining firm, in order to be able to reach the standards of the other European states, as structures specialized in combating corruption, in terms of firmness and, then, we hope, in terms of the frequency of corruption acts," Lazar said at a public event occasioned by the celebration of the European Day of Justice, held at the headquarters of the General Prosecutor's Office.
He spoke about the structures of the prosecutors' units nationwide, about the history of the judicial system in Romania and about the justice reform of the past years. The Prosecutor General also specified that infromatization of the prosecutors' offices represents a major step, and a large scale reform, also in terms of the money invested - about 70 million lei in two separate projects.
Attending the event were also the Law School students, who wanted to know more about the structure of the prosecutors' offices and the history of the Romanian judicial system. Alongside their professors, they visited the gallery of the prosecutors general, where they were also presented a chronology of the magistrates, starting from Mihail Kogalniceanu.
Counselor Ovidiu Predescu made a presentation of the professional cultural magazine of the Public Ministry, and then the students visited the library of the General Prosecutors' Office. The decision to mark the European Day of Justice every year, in the entire Europe, was taken on June 5, 2003 by the Council of Europe and the European Union, with its main objective to underline the fact that justice is, first of all, a service for citizens, by the means of which their rights and basic liberties are defended through the judicial procedures.
