The Romanian delegation to the 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change - COP27, which is taking place in Egypt, in Sharm El-Sheikh, will support the common position of the European Union, as approved by the Environment Council on October 24, told Agerpres.
The commitment of the EU and its member states aims to achieve climate neutrality in the Union by 2050, in order to fulfill the Paris Agreement. In addition, the commitment provides for the objective of reducing net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55pct compared to 1990 until 2030.
According to official sources, within the coordination meetings of the European Union, Romania will support the idea of promoting as effectively as possible the level of ambition declared by the current commitment of the Union, implemented through the legislative package "Fit for 55." Thus, Romania will emphasize the importance of continuing to respect the principles that have guided, until now, EU policies in the field of climate change, namely: equity, solidarity, flexibility and environmental integrity.
Also, Romania believes that a success of the COP27 would be the achievement of a decision on the mitigation of climate change. The Mitigation Work Programme (MWP) should start in 2023 and last until 2030 or at least until the mitigation gap is sufficiently closed.
It is very important for Romania to participate in the COP27 discussions regarding the Glasgow-Sharm-el-Sheikh Work Programme, considering both that our country supports various projects and initiatives regarding the adaptation and mitigation in developing countries, and the fact that Romania is committed to strengthening resilience and reducing vulnerability to climate change, the same sources show.
Romania continues the implementation of measures for adaptation to the effects of climate change, currently working on the revision of the National Strategy on Adaptation to Climate Change (SNACS) for the period 2022 - 2030 with the perspective of 2050 and the development of a new National Action Plan (NAPASC) for its implementation, within the RO-ADAPT project.
At the same time, Romania is part of the Agriculture Innovation Mission for Climate (AIM for Climate) initiative, which was officially launched in 2021, at the COP26 Conference in Glasgow, by the United States of America and the United Arab Emirates. Climate-smart agriculture helps to transform agricultural systems in order to sustainably increase agricultural productivity, to adapt this sector to climate change and to reduce/eliminate greenhouse gas emissions from related activities.
COP27 takes place between November 6 and 18. On Monday and Tuesday, the Climate Implementation Summit takes place, in which President Klaus Iohannis also participates. The head of state leads the Romanian delegation at COP27 and will support the National Declaration that will open the technical negotiations that will take place during the two weeks of the meeting. President Iohannis will also participate in multilateral and bilateral meetings. At the initiative of President Iohannis, Romania will host, together with the Czech Republic - the country that holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union -, a high-level event on the topic of promoting climate change education.
