The relationship between Bucharest and Berlin is "of utmost importance" in the current international context, MP Ovidiu Gant, representative of the Germans' Democratic Forum of Romania, declared on Tuesday on the occasion of the celebration of Romania - Germany Friendship Day.
"April 21, 1992 is the day when the Treaty on Friendly Cooperation and Partnership in Europe between Romania and the Federal Republic of Germany was signed in Bucharest. I thank the Romanian Parliament for the quasi-unanimous adoption of the law marking this day, and my colleague MP Silviu Vexler for collaborating on the implementation and initiation of the project. The Treaty paved the way for an exemplary relationship of partnership and friendship between the two countries, both bilaterally and within the European Union and NATO. Against the current international background of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine and of the resetting of transatlantic relations, the relationship with the Federal Republic of Germany is of utmost importance for Romania. Within NATO we are very good allies, as proven by our collaboration in recent years, as well as by Germany's concrete intentions to invest in the Romanian defense industry," Gant told the Chamber of Deputies' plenary session.
He also mentioned that Germany is Romania's main trading partner, with total exchanges amounting to over 42 billion euros in 2024.
"By the origin of the invested capital, Germany is by far the main investor in the Romanian economy - with over 19 billion euros. In one year alone, 2023 - 2024, the growth was over 2 billion euros. These investments have generated hundreds of thousands of jobs, so that our fellow citizens can work here, at home, in very good conditions. Hundreds of thousands of Romanians live and work in Germany, constituting together with Romania's German minority a solid bridge between the two countries. Ever since its establishment, the Germans' Democratic Forum of Romania has pursued as an absolute priority the expansion and deepening of bilateral relations between Romania and Germany. Based on the aforementioned treaty, both countries have committed to support the German minority in Romania, which has already happened in areas such as mother tongue education, social settlements, cultural life, heritage restoration and the preservation of the traditions of Germans in Romania. For all this, we are deeply grateful to Romania and Germany and we will continue to work towards intensifying our good bilateral relations, as well as those within NATO and the European Union," said Ovidiu Gant.
