Romania is becoming the first choice for technology centers of non-IT corporations, from Deutsche Bank to Lidl and JTI. The increasing interest of non-IT companies in expanding their internal teams is a notable trend that has intensified, explains a specialist according to ZF, as reported by Mediafax. Fifteen non-tech companies that have opened IT centers in Romania in recent years collectively employed an average of over 11,240 specialists in 2023.

A giant in the tobacco industry has started expanding

Romania is becoming the top choice for non-IT corporations looking for markets to open technology centers, the latest example being yesterday's announcement by the tobacco industry giant Japan Industrial Tobacco (JTI) regarding the opening of an IT hub in Bucharest with over 140 employees, providing services for the entire group.

"The technological hub established in Romania is one of the most important among JTI's six global centers and symbolizes our commitment to Romania’s development. (...) We will continue our story by investing in the local business, production capacities, brands, and people," said Alexander Pitchka, general manager of JTI Romania, Moldova, and Bulgaria.

The growing interest of non-tech companies in opening IT centers and expanding their internal IT teams is a significant trend, which has intensified with the slowdown in the IT services market and the reduced pressure on the IT-specialized human resources market, says Eugen Schwab-Chesaru, vice-president for Central and Eastern Europe at Pierre Audoin Consultants (PAC). Additionally, many such companies have adopted the IT service providers’ model to manage internal teams and projects more efficiently, with increasingly important nearshore and offshore components.
