"In accordance with the commitments Romania made to its NATO, partners, the Regele Ferdinand frigate is also part of the force package provided to NATO, thus contributing to the efforts to ensure regional security and stability. After completing the training sessions planned for the Mavi Balina 18 exercise organised by Turkey, the Romanian military ship got under the command of the NATO Maritime Allied Command (MARCOM) on Friday, October 5, at midnight to conduct maritime traffic monitoring missions in the Mediterranean Sea, as part of the Sea Guardian operation. The Sea Guard operation was launched under decisions made at the NATO Summit in Warsaw in 2016 to deter threats to NATO partners," according to a press statement released by Romania's Defence Ministry (MApN ).
According to the ministry, the 240 soldiers aboard Regele Ferdinand will carry out missions to monitor shipping in the Mediterranean Sea, thus demonstrating that Romania is a security provider with deployable operational platforms in various unstable areas where NATO's military presence is required to meet security objectives.
"Romania and the allies' continued commitment to common security and defence shows that we are united by the same democratic values as shared by all the NATO members and form a strong and united community capable of responding to all threats, regardless of their type or where they originate. The frigate will complete its missions in the Mediterranean Sea at the end of October, when it returns to Romania."
