March 1-8 is the peak of sales for most florists in Romania, and this year sales are expected to exceed 32.5 million EUR, according to an analysis carried out by the Frames consulting company.
"At an average price of 80 RON, if at least half of the young ladies and ladies receive a bouquet of flowers during this period, a simple calculation shows that more than 2 million bouquets of flowers will be sold, with sales recorded by florists exceeding 162.5 million RON, or 32.5 million EUR," reads the analysis.
The most sold flowers in this period are spring flowers, especially hyacinths and freesias, but 2025 could bring a greater interest of Romanians for roses and snowdrops.
According to INS data, there were 4,063,000 women aged between 15 and 49 in 2023 - 41.4% of the total female population. The estimate takes into account that more than 90% of flowers are sold in the city.
"Compared to previous years, the average price of a bouquet of flowers has increased significantly, from 40 RON in 2020 to 80 RON this year. There are, of course, cheaper bouquets as well, especially of snowdrops and hyacinths, but also bouquets and floral arrangements that cost hundreds of RON and are sold by specialized firms,'' the Frames analysis shows.
The value of flower sales on March 1 and March 8 is similar to last year, as the fall in purchasing power will lead many customers to opt for cheaper flower bouquets.
However, the flower market in Romania could reach an all-time record this year of more than 3.5 billion RON, amid significant growth in sales and business diversification in this sector.
"We are witnessing a maturing of the flower and ornamental plant market in Romania. The offers have greatly diversified, with flowers now also being sold in significant quantities in hypermarkets. And we're not just talking about bouquets of flowers, but especially ornamental plants, which are recording a positive trend in the sales of all stores. In other words, for many Romanians, to have at least one ornamental plant in the house has become a pleasant habit, in tune with the changes in perception and especially in consumer behavior," said Adrian Negrescu, Frames manager, in the press release sent to AGERPRES.
Statistics from the Trade Register and the Ministry of Finance show that the number of companies has tripled since 2021, from 3,111 to 9,067 companies today.
"Their business grew exponentially, from 2.2 billion in 2021 to 2.87 billion RON in 2023. In 2025, preliminary data indicate that, against the backdrop of inflation, diversification of supply and especially consumption growth, the business will reach the 3.5 billion RON mark. By comparison, 10 years ago, the business of companies in the sector barely exceeded 401 million RON. The profitability of the sector has also increased significantly, from 29 million RON in 2014 to 207.3 million RON in 2023. In 2025, Frames analysts are expecting a profit of over 300 million RON," reveals the Frames analysis.
The more than 9,000 registered firms currently employ more than 6,000 people, double the number 10 years ago.
According to the source, most specialized firms are in Bucharest (1,722), Ilfov (429), Cluj (413), Iasi (344) and Constanta (336).
"Apart from the large flower importers, most of which are Dutch, the vast majority of companies in the flower sector in Romania belong to the micro and small companies, with an average of 2 employees, a turnover of 964,000 RON (average) and a profit of 150,000 RON (average). The vast majority of companies in this sector are micro enterprises, with low financial strength and which operate in the retail flower trade. There are firms that have kiosks on street corners or own small commercial premises. For many of them, March is the peak of sales, generating, of course, the highest profit," reads the analysis.
In terms of trends, on March 1 and March 8, the best-selling flowers are spring flowers, especially hyacinths and freesias, but 2025 could bring a greater interest of Romanians for roses and snowdrops. Roses because the supply is higher than ever and the price has remained relatively stable, and snowdrops because they have a low price and, in the context of the snowfall in February, are a relevant symbol of the coming of spring, says the author of the analysis.
Beyond these trends, as in previous years, there is a significant demand for special bouquets, accompanied by gifts, which are mainly sold online.
"Online offers of flowers and gifts are at the forefront, with the development of fast courier services and payment by card, including interest-free installments, significantly boosting this niche in urban areas," concludes the analysis.
