Romania's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) welcomes the election of Oana Gherghinescu as executive director of the European Union Agency for Railways (ERA).

"The strong support from the member states and the European Commission for Oana Gherghinescu in this leadership position is a confirmation of both the expertise and professionalism of the Romanian candidate, as well as the result of the intense political-diplomatic efforts and the active inter-institutional cooperation carried out to promote this candidacy at EU level," says MAE.

Wednesday's election marks Romania getting a second position of executive director of a European agency, after the election of a Romanian diplomat at the helm of the European Labour Authority (ELA), in October 2020.

According to the MAE, the vote "also reconfirms the certain added value that the Romanian experts in various European agencies and authorities bring in support of the objectives at EU level and, implicitly, the growing profile of Romania at European level."

The European Union Agency for Railways (ERA) based in Valenciennes, France, is a key organisation in the European rail system, led by a management board comprising the EU member states and the European Commission.

Since 2006, the ERA has worked to develop economically viable common technical standards and safety measures and targets in cooperation with the rail sector, national authorities, EU institutions and other bodies.
