Romania's Ruse progresses to Miami Open women's singles R32

Romanian tennis player Gabriela Ruse has advanced to the women's singles round of 32 at the Miami Open WTA 1,000 tournament, total financial commitment USD 8,963,700, after defeating Poland's Magdalena Frech 6-4 6-4.

Qualifier Ruse, 27, world number 102, prevailed in an hour and 47 minutes.

The Romanian was down 4-2 in the first set, but came back and won 6-4, after four consecutive games. In the second set, Ruse led 4-1, after which Frech got closer to 4-3 and 5-4, but the Romanian won again 6-4.

Ruse is now 3-1 in the head-to-head count versus Frech, 27, world number 27, 21sr seed at Miami Open. Ruse won in 2016, in Koksijde (Belgium), 7-6 (7/5) 7-6 (7/5), Frech took her revenge in 2020, in the first round in Prague 7-6 (10/8) 6-3, but the Romanian won in 2022, in Sydney, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.

For her performance so far, Ruse won USD 60,400 and 95 WTA singles points. In the round of 16, she will meet the winner between Belarusian Arina Sabalenka, world number one, and Bulgarian Viktoria Tomova.
