Romania will participate in the Winter Olympics in Beijing - China, due February 4 - 20, with a roster of at least 19 athletes, as another four might add following the re-allocation of spots, head of the Romanian delegation Florin Misca told AGERPRES on Tuesday.
"At this moment we are talking about 19 athletes, but another 4 spots may appear this week through re-allocation. We are trying to finalize the list on January 20, the deadline is a little later, but there's a meeting of the Olympic Sports Committee's Executive Board that also has the approval of the nominal delegation on the agenda. So, on January 20 the Board will approve the nominal list of participants and four more names could appear until January 23. We hope this happens sooner, because it confuses us with other logistical operations, with the plane tickets in the first place," said Florin Misca.
As regards China's entry requirements, the Romanian Olympic Sports Committee official said that the vaccine is not mandatory but that the Romanian team is fully vaccinated for Covid.
Misca said that procuring the international transport tickets was the most difficult problem encountered in organizing Romania's participation in the 2022 Winter Olympics.
"The organizers have established a list of airlines eligible to land in China and operate temporary flights that will only service the Olympic Games. Because of this, and combined with the procedures the Olympic Committee has to observe, the process has become a bit longer. We are working with a framework agreement and the registered agencies didn't receive answers from the respective companies. This was the most difficult task, unlocking travel bookings. But after repeated attempts and insistence with the Organizing Committee, we succeeded," Misca said.
