The number of people who entered the country through the Nadlac II Border Crossing Point in the last 24 hours has increased sevenfold compared to a typical day, reaching 50,000 travelers. This surge is due to many Romanians working abroad returning home for the holidays.
Representatives of the Arad Border Police reported on Friday that over 57,000 people were checked on the entry side of the border crossing points in the county, with 50,000 of them passing through Nadlac II.
On a typical day, 7,000 people cross into Romania at Nadlac II, meaning that in the last 24 hours, the number has increased sevenfold.
Romanians working abroad who are returning home for the holidays will not have to wait in long queues at the border when leaving Romania in January.
"It is important to note that, starting January 1, 2025, controls at land borders will be eliminated. This means people will be able to travel to or from other Schengen Area countries without having to stop for border checks. This will apply to all individuals, regardless of nationality, and to all types of transport, including cars, buses, minibuses, trucks, ships, and trains. However, border police will remain present in their area of competence, especially at the border, and will continue to conduct random and unannounced police checks together with other authorities, such as the Police, Gendarmerie, or Immigration, and other competent structures, to prevent and combat illegal migration and cross-border crime," Arad Border Police Spokesman Andrei Dinca told AGERPRES.
Authorities recommend that travelers consult the "Trafic Online" application on www.politiadefrontiera.ro to check waiting times at the border and choose less congested crossing points.
On Friday morning, at Nadlac II, eight control lanes were open to manage traffic. Despite this, waiting times of up to 50 minutes were reported on the motorway. At Nadlac I, the wait was about an hour with two lanes open, while there was no congestion at Turnu and Varsand.
